Fed: Evans questions US support for UN role in Iraq
Former foreign minister and International Crisis Group President GARETH EVANS has questionedthe federal government's claim that the US supports a strong role for the United Nationsin post-war Iraq.
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says the Bush administration is relaxed and positiveabout UN involvement in Iraq's reconstruction and the idea of a UN special coordinatorfor the country.
Mr DOWNER's met President GEORGE W BUSH, Vice President DICK CHENEY and National SecurityAdviser CONDOLEEZZA RICE.
But Mr EVANS has told ABC Radio he's been told today by the White House that Washington'sunlikely to accept a strong UN role.
The Brussels-based International Crisis Group is a privately funded group which aimsto prevent war through diplomacy and lobbying.
