ALBANY Former Public Works Commissioner Kevin Byng has been officially fired by the city after a hearing officer found the now-jailed official guilty of misconduct.
Byng, whose highly publicized fall included absences from work, problems with drinking and drugs, and police chases, was fired by his successor, General Services Commissioner Willard Bruce, in a Nov. 16 letter. The dismissal followed a finding by hearing officer Stephen Rehfuss that Byng was away from work without permission since May.
The letter was sent to Byng in Albany County jail, where he is serving a sentence for reckless endangerment.
