Vic: Road deaths down, but country roads problem

Victoria's regional roads were the killers last year, with seven per cent more peopledying on country roads than in 2001, despite an overall drop.

There was a 25 per cent decrease in road fatalities in metropolitan Melbourne, while188 people were killed in country Victoria -- 11 more than the previous year.

The state's annual road toll, which closed at midnight last night, was 397, comparedto 444 in 2001.
