Vic: Injured policeman was worried about fellow officers

A policeman who was bashed unconscious and had his pistol stolen on Easter Sunday says
he was worried the weapon could be used on fellow officers.

Senior Constable ALLAN UEBERGANG, from Quambatook, in Victoria's north, has been released
from Bendigo Base Hospital after being treated for a broken jaw, nose and cheekbones.

He says he remembers little about the incident.

But he says he was concerned about the safety of his colleagues while being taken to
hospital by ambulance.

Police say the attack occurred when Senior Constable UEBERGANG stopped a car for a
routine check at Quambatook.

It sparked a lengthy high-speed chase and a stand-off in the northern Victorian town
of Kerang before police arrested and charged two men.

Two New South Wales men, aged 24 and 22, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday
charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, aggravated burglary, unlawful imprisonment
and several assault and firearm offences.
